Home v Kelseymen NDL4

This season's NDL games are turning out strangely. First the debacle of the Victoria Park game and now the capitulating manner in which we lost this game. Having got the opposition 9 down in the 90's we let them get away with 136, still not a huge total especially at Hayne. We then got ourselves out for 113 with not 1 batsman taking the initiative and playing positively. Earlier, Phil had been the crop of the bowlers taking 3-16 from his allotted 9 overs, with Robbie in good support returning with 3-23 and Jim 2 -24.

Away v Weare Giffard NDL4

The picturesque setting of the Weare Giffard ground.

A long journey, a picturesque ground, another defeat. On paper we had a very strong side which, due to the absence of Charles, was skippered by John Pitts. Batting first we lost both openers for ducks, Mike being caught brilliantly one handed in the slips. John played a pivotal role in the innings, occupying the crease for the majority of the afternoon, but scoring very slowly. His main adversary was Ben who played very well and ultimately outscored John. The Cheriton middle order contributed very little to the scoring and it was left to Jim and Andy to see out the final 6 overs, which they did very well to their credit, both finishing unbeaten with the score on a lame 123 for 9.
Tea was taken in the village hall, a short stroll down the road alongside the River Torr. If we were going to stand a chance of winning this game we had to take early wickets. So when after 3 overs the WG score was 10 for 3 the collective tail was up. Ben and Phil doing the damage with a wicket in each over. However Ben was unusually shipping runs, so the skipper turned to Jim to try and break things up. He got the WG no4 out with a fine leg stump Yorker, but that was the end of the wickets as Jury despatched the ball to the boundary with regularity and the runs were knocked off with 25 overs remaining. Painful. After the formalities of the score sheet we all sped back to the ROB to witness Englands exciting victory over India in the T20 which lightened the mood a little.

Away v Bridford

After a very wet afternoon we didn't hold out much hope of playing, but the Bridford ground - not the hardest to find but nonetheless not the easiest - was surprisingly playable. One can often tell how good the opposition is going to be just by the look of them and their demeanor, and I have to confess that with our 9 plus their 12th man - John - I didn't think this would be an easy game. Batting first the Bridford openers quickly amassed runs bringing the 50 up in only the 6th over. They had obviously been watching far too much T20 and worse still learning from it! It took a run out to break the partnership up, Cutler Snr luckily deflecting Cutler Jnr's good throw onto the stumps. Both Phil and Jim had a hand or two in all the 5 wickets to fall. Jim took a good running and diving catch off Roy's bowling, and then held on well to a skier off of Gavin's - now that confused the scorers Roy Gavin Avery!! Phil took a good one handed catch to give Anthony a wicket, after he had passed the wicket keeping gloves over to Peter; and finally Phil took a catch off his own bowling to claim a wicket for himself off the last ball of the innings. By this time Bridford had amassed their best 20 over total, scoring 191 for 5.
According to John - groundsman,scorer,reporter,player- Bridford are more of a bowling side! Great news when your depleted side is facing a run target of 192 to win! All the Cheriton batsmen gave it a go but from the first ball we were never in the hunt and finished 115 runs short on 76 for 8. Sadly we couldn't join them for a drink afterwards as those that would have, had to rush back to the Half Moon for a summer skittles match - ah well at least CFCC won something tonight!

Sunday 21st June

Home v Bill Owen's XI

It was a pleasure to welcome Bill and his XI to Hayne once again.
As is now traditional Charles lost the toss and Bill decided that he would bat first on a close and overcast afternoon.
Charles opened the innings with his customary one over before letting the bowlers have a go. After just 3 runs Bill was to regret the decision to bat when Ted let one slip out of his hand early and he top edged it into the peak of his helmet. Shaken and with a cut to his right eyebrow Bill was forced to retire hurt. We have been promised a picture of the black eye for the gallery…
Will and Ted did not do any further damage until the 11th over when Ted bowled C. Gwyther with a jaffer. Despite this he was taken off and replaced by Phil. The somewhat more reliable Cutler Snr. returned 8-2-20-1 and with Robbie trundling up for 8-2-42-1 from the other end the game was finely balanced.
Mike felt he was the man to turn (metaphorically anyway) the game. He took a wicket in his first over but was cruelly cut down in his second. Forced to retire half was through the over he can only dream of what could have been.
Jim Fairclough and Mark Lomas bowled us to the finish, both taking wickets to leave Bill’s XI to defend 216 after tea.
Mike was bullish about his ability to bat, and so fortified by Jane’s cakes he strode out to the middle with Ted. Shortly after he crept back, retired hurt for 0. Brigden batted well for a breezy 12 and Phil looked good for his 21, but the runs were coming slowly. Jeremy was plumb on 4 and Peter fell victim to a sharp c+b to leave the home side with some work to do to get close.
The Captain adopted an uncharacteristic safety first (some said boring) once Jim F had fallen for 13 (3 scoring shots, 1, 6, 6) and Mark for 0 the following ball. With a win now a distant prospect he settled into a groove that would have sent Tavere and Boycott to sleep.
Despite Steve and Robbie’s efforts Cheriton ended some way short of the target and so Bill’s XI retained the Butterfield Emmett Trophy.
In return for the Trophy Bill very kindly presented us with a framed photograph of the teams from the inaugural match which will take pride of place in the pavilion.

PS we are hoping to have toilets next year, honest!
