Catptain's XI vs. Chairman's XI (Home)
Well, the weather over the last week has got the better of us
and so the Catptain's XI vs. Chairman's XI game will have to be
put off until later in the year.
Although this afternoon was sunny and breezy it was not enough
to dry out a very wet pitch.
Still, we did get quita a lot of painting done!
Thanks
to those who stayed to help, and let's hope we have better weather
next wekend.

Sunday
20th April
vs Blagdon Hill CC (Home)
The second game of the season was also lost to the weather.
Despite Sunday being by far the best day of the weekend the pitch
was too wet for any prospect of play.
On the up side it did allow us to fully enjoy the Folk Festival,
including Sunday afternoon's Morris Dancing workshop.... |
Thurday
24th April
vs Heads & Tails CC (Home)
The first game of the season saw a relatively easy win for the
home team.
The pitch was soft and stroke play was not easy, but it is to
Mike's immense credit that we played at all. Details are sketchy
at the moment, but I do know that we Rob Keight opened, kept wicket
and top scored with the bat.
Sounds
a very odd game to me!

27th April
vs. North Devon II
NDL3
The very changeable weather meant Mike waited until just after
9am to finally decide that we were going to be able to play. At
10am as I was walking down the village to get some eggs to use
in the baking it started to rain.... but we played anyway.
Grey and chilly was entered in the scorebook under conditions
along side ND IInds in the toss won by box. It was not a surprise
to be asked to bat first on a very soft pitch, the same one as
we had used last Thursday.
 |
|
Mike
and Peter posed for a photo on the way to the crease and
unfortunately Mike was on his way back to the pavilion before
Phil had got the telephoto lens sorted out. A 3 ball duck
was not what we wanted from our main run-getter! R. Kelly
also accounted for Peter for only 5, leaving us on 2 for
11.
Lots of mid-pitch discussions between Phil and Charles ensued,
mostly along the "Let's try to stick about until Jeremy
arrives..." lines. Phil was giving the fielding side
kittens by playing very very late, a tactic that allowed
him to judge the pace of the ball, slow, slower and slowest....
Charles kept the fielding side interested by lobbing them
catches, but nobody was able to cling on to anything so
the pair were able to see things through and settle the
nerves.
|
With
56 on the board and the slower change bowlers on Charles lost
his off bail, but he had managed to delay getting out for
long enough to be replaced by Jeremy. Now Jeremy rarely looks
lithe, but he was looking more than averagely knackered having
come hot-foot from child-wrangling duties at his daughter's
birthday party. He adopted the same tactic as Phil, playing
the ball off the pitch and settled in quickly.
Phil had now been in for 20 overs and was freeing himself
from the early shackles with a series of lovely cover and
straight drives. Jeremy also got into the act, showing his
class by lofting a couple of huge sixes on his way to 44 not
out.
When Phil finally went there was some doubt about his final
tally, particularly as Dave rushed the scorer by getting out
for a third ball duck, but Steve steadied things and we ended
on 180 for 5. Of that we were sure, but it was not until the
end of the match that we managed to work out that Phil had
missed his ton by only 4 runs... |
|
 |
Tea was taken under lightening skies - there was even a hint of
blue between the clouds - and by the time Phil was marking out his
run the sun was shining. Cricketing Lore would indicate that things
should have been easier for batting with the sun out and the pitch
and outfield drying, but that would all depend on the bowling. Phil
and Will both looked a little rusty to start with, but after an
over (or in Will's case three) settled into a good rhythm. Will
bowled out his 9 without taking a wicket, Phil managed only one
in his 6 overs and Dave Carr's first few did not set the world alight,
so ND IInds were well set despite now having lost both openers.
Then came Rob....
Slower bowlers were more difficult to get away than the faster ones,
confidence and getting well forward or all the way back the best
way to prosper. Being in two minds was fatal, for scoring at least,
and Rob managed to induce multiple personalities in everyone he
bowled at. Although he only took two wickets he could have had six
or seven if the stumps had been varnished. You know he is going
well when he is giggling to himself as we walks back to his mark.
When Dave's first spell came to an end the Captain turned to Cutler
to rip the heart out of the middles order. Cutler J. that is, not
P. Now I think his Father was joking when he said that he thought
Jr. would end up with more wickets than he would this season....
on this evidence he could well be right! 4-0-9-3 was the pick of
the day and it would have been more if he was old enough to have
to bowled more overs..
Luke replaced Robbie and we had the sight of two CFCC Colts bowling
in tandem, one 16 and one 14. Fittingly it was Luke who finished
things off, inducing a false shot from the ND IInds No 10 and Phil
taking an easy catch at mid off.
Phil has to be man of the match for his 96, pushed close by Jim,
with an honourable mention going to Steve. On a very difficult day
for keeping he gave yet another faultless display in a good all
round team performance that resulted in a convincing 58 runs victory
and our first 20 points in Division 3.
